Midden in het stadscentrum van Arnhem, aan de Beekstraat, verhuurt SLAK kunststudio’s aan een diverse groep creatieven. De ruimte was ooit een winkelcentrum dat verschillende gebouwen aan elkaar koppelde. Als je helemaal naar boven loopt, via het dak en nog wat verder omhoog, kom je bij de studio van Lado Darakhvelidze (1977 Kutaisi, Georgië). De kleurrijke ruimte is momenteel de thuisbasis van Lado’s artistieke praktijk, die zich richt op informatie media en hun sociopolitieke impact. Zijn werk toont complexe relaties en verbanden tussen persoonlijke verhalen en maatschappelijke situaties in verschillende politieke contexten.
In februari 2023 word je bij binnenkomst in de ruimte begroet door een ballon. Het is een grote nul, half leeggelopen, zwevend door de kamer. Dit is echter niet de enige ballon in de ruimte. Lado heeft latex ballonnen gebruikt als onderdeel van zijn recentere werken, geïnspireerd door de theorieën over subjectiviteit van Jacques Lacan.
Ballon topologie
Het onderwerp van dit kunstwerk – subjectiviteit – wordt vertegenwoordigd door de Borromeïsche knoop. De knoop bestaat uit drie elementen: het symbolische, het imaginaire en het reële. Vergelijkbaar hoe een mens zijn eigenheid en percepties bestaan uit invloeden van het symbolische, het imaginaire en het reële. In Lado’s werk worden deze elementen vertegenwoordigd door de gekleurde latex ballonnen. Alles blijft samen in een staat van onderlinge verbondenheid. Als je een van de ballonnen van de Borrome ïsche knoop doorprikt, valt het onderwerp uit elkaar, met andere woorden: je raakt in een psychotische ineenstorting als de ballon van het imaginaire wordt opgeblazen – hoe ondervind je de mogelijkheid om evenwicht te bewaren en je subjectiviteit intact te houden.
“Dit perspectief op topologie is een visuele representatie die je kunt gebruiken in het dagelijks leven. Om jezelf of je directe omgeving te helpen. Het biedt perspectief op hoe je je eigen subjectiviteit kunt helpen, op zijn minst om wat tools te hebben om deze in balans te houden. Dus het eerste is; zorg voor jezelf als een subject.”
Met zijn kunst wil Lado de boodschap overbrengen dat idealisme en perfectionisme slechts ideologische constructies zijn die vaak leiden tot onnodige stress en angst. Hij daagt het idee uit dat men moet streven naar een onbereikbare standaard van perfectie en pleit ervoor om onze imperfecties en 
verlangens te omarmen en te bekijken
voor wat ze zijn.
De wens om te delen en verbinding te zoeken
“Als iemand deze theorieën niet begrijpt, zal ik het uitleggen met de ballonnen. Zo kan ik toch uitleggen waar het allemaal om draait. Sommige mensen doen het met cartoons, geschiedenisprojecten of met herinneringen. Als ik enthousiast ben over iets dat ik ontdekt heb, heb ik de behoefte dit te delen en plezier te hebben met deze ontdekkingen. Het is het moment van verbinding. Dat is waarvoor ik het doe; het gevoel van verbinding. Verbinding maken met bepaalde dingen die onbewust in ons zitten. Gewoon dingen die deel uitmaken van ons echte zelf dat constant over het hoofd wordt gezien en niet symboliseerbaar is.
Hotel Krystal
“Tijdens de covid-pandemie ging ik terug naar Georgië. Ik zat in een bus op weg naar hotel Krystal, waar ik 10 dagen in quarantaine zat. Gedurende deze 10 dagen schreef ik een verhaal over de busrit naar het hotel. Het is een verhaal over al deze mensen die met elkaar en contact staan en wie door de situatie uit elkaar valt. Een observatie van de interacties.”
De reactie van de passagiers in de bus, de manier waarop ze reageren op de situatie waarin ze zich bevinden, laat zien hoe wereldwijde rampen deze mensen beïnvloeden. De behoefte aan collectieve sociale verantwoordelijkheid en hulp die verder gaat dan de grenzen van een natie. Het verhaal is een representatie van een sociale reactie op een politiek probleem.
Lado is een leraar, een multidisciplinaire kunstenaar en een kunstenaarsomroeper. Hij opent ruimte voor bijeenkomsten en het delen van onderwerpen die sociaal, politiek en cultureel relevant zijn.

Right in the city centre of Arnhem at the Beekstraat, SLAK rents out art studio’s to a diverse number of creatives. The space used to be a shopping mall, connecting a number of buildings together. If you walk all the way up, over the roof and up some more, you will find the studio space occupied by Lado Darakhvelidze (1977 Kutaisi, Georgia). The colourful space is the current home to Lado’s artistic practice, which focuses on information media and their sociopolitical impacts. His work displays complex relations and links between personal narratives and societal situations, in different political setups.
In February 2023, the first thing that greets you as you enter the space is a balloon. It is a big zero, half deflated, floating around the room. It follows Lado around as he moves through the space. As it happens, this isn’t the only balloon in the space. Lado explains it is part of one of his more recent works, inspired by theories of subjectivity of Jacques Lacan.
Balloon topology
The construction of multiple balloons holding each other together become the subject. The topic of this art piece – subjectivity – is represented the borromean knot. The knot consist of three elements: the symbolic, the imaginary and the real. Just as a persons uniqueness and perceptions consist of influences by the symbolic, the imaginary and the real. In Lado’s work these elements are represented by the latex coloured balloons. Together, everything stays in a state of interconnection. As when you pop one of the balloons from Borromean knot , the subject falls apart, in other words: one enters a psychotic breakdown when the balloon of imaginary is exploded– you possess the ability to maintain equilibrium (or balance) in order to keep your subjectivity intact.
“This perspective on topology is a visual representation you can use in daily life. To help yourself or your own immediate community. It creates perspective on how to help your own subjectivity, at least to have some tools to help keep it in balance. So the first thing is; take care of yourself as a subject.”
Through his art, Lado aims to convey the message that idealism and perfectionism are ideological constructs that often lead to unnecessary stress and anxiety. He challenges the notion that one must strive for an unattainable standard of perfection and advocates for embracing our imperfections and desires. Rather dealing with them and viewing them for what they are.
The desire to share and seek connection
“If they don’t understand the theories I will explain it with the balloons. They will understand what it is all about. Some people will do it with cartoons, history projects or with memories. If I am excited about something I discovered, I just have desire to share and to have fun with these discoveries. It’s the moment of connection. That’s why I do it. It’s this feeling to connect. To connect to certain things that are unconscious in us. Just things that are a part of our real that stay constantly overlooked and unsymbolisable because real itself is unsymbolisable, that’s why I create forms of formulas of subjectivities, and not a symbolic objects.”
Hotel Krystal
“During covid I went back to Georgia. I sat on a bus while on my way to hotel Krystal, where I was in quarantine for 10 days. During these 10 days I wrote a story about the bus ride to the hotel. It’s a story about all these people interacting with each other, who is falling apart. An observation of the interactions.”
The response of the voyagers on the bus, the way that they respond to the situation they are in, shows the impact the worldwide disasters influence these people. The need for collective social responsibility and help that goes beyond a nations borders. The story is a representation of a social reaction to a political issue.
Lado is a teacher, a multidisciplinary artist, and an artist-broadcaster. Opening up space for gathering and sharing on subjects that are socially, politically and culturally relevant.
